We are looking for excited and eager students, entering grades 5 through 12 (and NEW this year: graduating seniors!), who wish to partake in the amazing journey that West Side Story will provide! Students, no matter what part they play, should expect to have a fair amount of acting, singing, and plenty of dancing opportunity within this show! What is West Side Story? Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
Also, NEW for this year: LYST Advanced Theatre Workshop! This will be for select students chosen by the artistic team who prove in their audition for the MainStage production that they have what it takes to dive into an intensive workshop to deepen and broaden their theater skills. These students will participate in both shows and will get the chance to perform their show in a matinee performance during production week! This year's show will be Songs for a New World. Jason Robert Brown (the composer and creator of SfaNW) says, "it's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back." These are the stories and characters of today, the SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD.
Lastly, we want to welcome our artistic team this year! Back again, Mark Mercer will taking the reigns as the artistic director and music director. New this year, Darvin Hernandez will be joining the team as the assistant director and choreographer. They are both looking forward to meeting and working with you! So why are you still wondering if you should be a part of this great opportunity? Audition!
How do you audition? Auditions will be Wednesday, May 28th and Thursday, May 29th, 2014 at 6:00pm. Auditions will be held in the basement at 2 Militia Drive, Lexington, MA 02421. What do you need for auditions? Please prepare a 32-bar Broadway audition piece and bring sheet music for the pianist. In addition to your music, bring clothes and shoes you can dance in for the dance portion of the audition. Call backs will be Friday, May 30th, 2014 at 6:00pm.
So what is LYST exactly? LYST is a student and parent cooperative summer theatre experience. As much as we want our students to get a lot from this experience, we also want our parents to be a part of the action! From costuming to set building, we will be looking forward to working alongside you!
Is there a cost? Yes. The cost per child is $275.
Have questions? Feel free to e-mail the director at firstname.lastname@example.org. Mark will be more than happy to get back to you at his earliest convenience. Looking forward to a fantastic year at LYST! New heights to soar, new worlds to explore!
